In-Situ Drawings

Illustrations were often used as an opening spread when the photos weren’t quite right in that position.

I only ever resorted to illustration in exceptional circumstances. I love photos. When there wasn’t a shot that quite ‘expressed’ the article in the right way for an intro spread, I went to option 2.

I often drew them directly from a photo that worked better as an illustration in that spot.

Sometimes, they were a mashup, like the Road Fools 13 spread and the Dennis McCoy interview.

Side note: I don’t remember ever doing a mashup using actual photography in the final piece. For whatever reason, I don’t believe I have licence to mess with the photographer’s work in that way. Plus, I’m not very good at it.
